Matches & Positions

Below is a list of games I have annotated and positions I regard as interesting. The games are parts of matches I have played on FIBS. I have only annotated those matches that I find interesting because of something that happened during it. The positions have arisen either by playing online or during real life matches.

I am not a world class player, and I will not pretend to be one. My judgement and reasoning does contain errors, and there's always questions I cannot answer. I've played around 2600 total match points on FIBS and around 2000 on the Games Grid. That, combined with the fact that I usually have opinions about nearly everything, makes me I believe my matches can help people play better. My advice is that you read through the matches carefully, examine the positions and decide what move you would have done. Then you can read my comments and either agree or disagree. If you think my errors are severe please feel free to mail me your comments, and I'll take a closer look at the position, probably do a roll out, and correct it.

How to beat a bot

There has been written many articles to rec.games.backgammon about how to beat the bots on FIBS. Playing a back game is one of the recipies for winning, and in this game against Yabot I took the idea to extremes. It did work, but as I have found out by going through the match Yabot plays a strong game, so it was as always part luck and part skill that made me win the game. It's a long game (170 positions (85 rolls for each side)), but it has helped me understand how to play back games better, as well as give me some general knowledge that is helpful in all match types.

Higher rated opponents

This game was played when I had a rating of about 1530 on FIBS. My opponent had around 1630, and I often take myself in showing higher rated players far too much respect. This was to be an exception from that rule.

A post-Crawford game that started out as a backgame for me and ended in a backgame for my opponent.

Thou shalt learn from thy mistakes

The last game in a 5-point match where I show that I haven't learned anything from my 5-prime problem (found under position as "A 6-1 ruined my 5-prime").
