In Kvalross bukta (The Walrus bay) there was a lot of activity about 370 years ago. Dutch whalers had their base here, catching whales in the sea around the island and doing the refining on the beach here. Today one can find remnants of their buildings as floor boards and bricks in the sand. To large cannons were found here some years ago, they are today placed in Olonkinbyen. On the lower picture a small cabin can be seen, this was built during the World War 2. The mountain is called Kvalrossen (The Walrus)
