I took this picture late in October 1997 standing on the ice on Sørlaguna facing towards Søyla (The black rock a little to the right of the center of the picture) and Beerenberg. Søyla is remnants of a volcano where only harder material of a volcano plug is left. The rock is 114 m high and is a very popular nesting place for birds. At the base of Søyla the vegetation is quite rich because of guano from the birds.
