Radio soundings

Launching an old type radiosonde

The radiosondes were quite big and clumsy with a "propeller" used to change frequencies so that the sonde could send data for temperature, humidity and pressure separately. One person went out with the radiosonde, while one person maneuvered the hydrogen filled balloon outside. The sonde is attached to the balloon with a long string so they had to coordinate the release so the string wouldn't break.
