The construction of the air field/landing strip started in august 1960. On the picture you can see the first plane landing on Jan Mayen air field - already on September 17th 1960.
This was a Catalina from the Royal Norwegian Air Force sent to pick up a man with peritonitis. The first civilian plane landed on the air field Oct. 29. 1961.
It was a DC4 Skymaster from Braathens SAFE
