The law of May 16th, 1991 states 2:3 to be the proportions of the flag.
The combination of these colours is based on those of the flag of the European Union. It expresses the ambition of this region to become the capital of the EU - a status it has to share with Luxembourg, Luxembourg, and Strasbourg, France up till now. The symbol of the Iris was choosen, because it is said that it used to flourish on the swamps of the river the Zenne. There was an active search for a neutral symbol between the Flemish lion and the Walloon Cocq.
The law of May 16th, 1991, permits some variations in the colours of the flag and the emblem. The flag can have following variations:
The Brussels Capital Region is the third region in the Belgian Kingdom, together with the Flemish and the Walloon Region. It is composed out of 19 communes, who have a strict bilingual status. At the installation of the provinces of Vlaams-Brabant and Brabant wallon on the 1st of January, 1995, the provincial level between this region and the communes was abolished.
