History of the Province

In the ancient times, Taxanders lived in the area of the current province. Later on, it was a part of Austrasia, and in the Middle Ages it became known as the Land of Rijen, which developped into the bordercounty Antwerp, dependent of the duchy of Brabant and the Holy Roman Empire. The manor Mechelen (Malines) was owned by the episcopal principality of Liège. In the 16th and 17th century, Antwerp and Mechelen were two of the Seventeen Provinces. Together with those provinces, Antwerp came under Burgundian, Spanish and Austrian ruling, and formed during the French occupation from 1795 until 1815 the department of the Two-Netes.
