The flag is an armorial banner of the arms of the province.
Adopted on January 2, 1995.

The lion is copied from the arms of the old unitarian province, which in its turn has inherited it from the duchy of Brabant. Two stepping cocks were added, getting a place of honour. The first cock represents the French Community, whereas the second one represents the Walloon region (although officially, the Walloon Region cannot have an emblem). [hw96]
At the creation of the provinces of Brabant wallon and Vlaams-Brabant, there was a need for flags and arms for the two new provinces. The Conseil d'héraldique et de vexillologie de la Communauté française (Council of heraldry and vexillology of the French Community) proposed six designs, given here below. None of these were accepted, and eventually, the council had to do a seventh proposal which was politically acceptable. [mps+94]

On January 1st, 1995, this province arose as the Walloon part of the old province of Brabant, namely the district of Nivelles. It is now the fifth Walloon province of Belgium. The capital is Wavre
