Frederiks Gave Historical Society was founded June 6th, 1986.

It was founded after a course in reading German hand, which gathered a number of people interested in history. The society covers the neighbor parishes Alvdal and Folldal, situated in the northern part of Østerdalen, Hedmark county, Norway.

The name Frederiks Gave has to do with mining, which is common history to Alvdal and Folldal. The first name of the Folldal mining works was Frederiks Gaves Copper works, and the mining started here in 1748. The ore was carried to Lovise Hytte in Alvdal to be melted. The melting work lasted for several periods, and came to an end when Lovise Hytte burned down in 1878. The operations at Folldal works lasted until 1995. However, the Folldal works "inherited" its name from Sel works in Gudbrandsdalen. Following several owners, governor Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve was given the Sell Works from his father, King Frederik III. He therefore named it Frederiksgabes Kobberverk ("Frederik's gift's copper works"), and the partnership from Sel was responsible for the operations at Folldal works.
