Garmin GPS 12 MAP and GPS III PLUS only
(and other Garmin GPS receivers with downloadable map (or POI) memories)
Actually it is possible to display more than 74 different waypoint symbols in the Garmin GPS 12 MAP and GPS III PLUS receivers. This method will probably also work in other Garmin GPS receivers with downloadable map (or POI) memories (unfortunately it does not work in some newer Garmin GPS receivers, e.g. the eTrex Vista and GPS 72 (and probably more)):
| 1. | Download a map set (e.g. from MapSource WorldMap) (or a POI set from a POI database) containing the desired symbol(s) to the GPS receiver. |
| 2. | Display a map (or POI field) with a desired symbol. |
| 3. | Move the panning arrow to the symbol so it is highlighted (as in the example below). |
| 4. | Push the ENTER button briefly to turn it into a waypoint. |
| 5. | A New Map Waypoint page will be displayed. Everything on this page may be changed as desired (e.g. name and coordinates) except the waypoint symbol (already selected, remember). |

| Example of display with extra waypoint symbols in Garmin GPS 12 MAP and GPS III PLUS receivers, here used as an illustration on how to indicate good places for picking wild berries in the woods: Navaid, Amber = bog with cloudberries; Navaid, White/Red = bog without cloudberries; Navaid, Green = blueberries; Navaid, Red = raspberries; Navaid, White = cowberries. |
The visual representation of these extra waypoint symbols may be displayed on a computer screen by a program (e.g. MapSource) after their waypoints have been uploaded to a computer. Note, however, that all waypoint symbols not existing originally in a Garmin GPS receiver, will be represented by the Waypoint symbol (black square (no. 18), see above) when waypoints with such symbols are downloaded to a receiver!
