SOURCES

On the edit screen under Notes I have 3 internal filename files. One of these is an obituary that I would like to tag and place under the N of the buried events line. I can copy or cut the textfile within the edit screen but when I get to the add text area of the notes area for the buried event I only see at the top FILE as the only entry. I would be looking for the edit in order to paste the data into the addfile text area. Is there any way of being able to move an already existing text file into the specific notes area without having to retype the entire text file again?

After you copy to the clipboard, you can paste using Shift+INS into any field.

We can change the name of a source, but we cannot remove a source. So our list of sources grows. This is not convenient. In BK 5.2 that was no problem, because you had an opportunity to change a general source. Please find an easy solution.

To remove a source from a person, hit the Delete Source button on the source grid.
To remove a source from the list of sources go to the main screen and pick File, Sources, Delete unused.

I'm using the 'Descendents' - 'Indented Book' form to print out a book on a family line. Everything is A-OK except for the sources printed at the bottom of the page.
I have used 'a' source reference on several events for the people in this line. Each source prints out fine, except this 'source' shows up a dozen times for the source 1 thru 12 on the same page.
Is there anyway that the program could only print the source once to a page, and use that number each time it shows up, instead of 12 times on the page?

I assume you are making an RTF file.
BK puts the source as a footnote each time it is cited.
BK does not know what will be on the same page, since the RTF file will be loaded into Word or WP and then Word or WP will set the page layout. In other words you can make the page size 3 inches by 5 inches or you can make it legal paper size. So BK does not know what footnotes will be on page 1 or page 2 since the word processor will control who is on each page.
Therefore, unless your word processor can decide which sources are the same, then I do not know a way to do what you want.
However, BK has the option to print "Endnotes with no repeats". If you pick that option on the RTF tab in BK then it will cite the source one time with footnote number, and then use the same number for the rest of the report.
Perhaps that is what you want (even though it is endnotes and not footnotes.)

(Deleting sources)
I thank you for the help, which you gave us last week. We know that you are preparing improvemnts in the case of the sources. In the meantime we have followed the instructions by you and Otto for changing master-sources.
Before changing a master-source we have made a list of all the person with a certain source "CBG advertenties Nabarro". We have used therefore "Search any field" both opportunities "Search person file" and "Search marriage dates, places etc.".
Because we have 5x the source "CBG advertenties Nabarro", we have changed all these source-information to "CBG advertenties (Nunes) Nabarro". After we have checked by "Search any field" in both opportunities and we got the information there was nobody in the file with "CBG advertenties Nabarro".
Next step was to go to the mainpage file, sources, delete unused sources, Start. After Start the program does not start Reading event file like at delete unused locations. Deleting of unused locations does not give any problem. So I do not know what we are doing wrong now or is there a small bug in the program. We have tried it out several times. But in vain.

29.1.2001 Over the weekend I made some changes. I think it will help the problem you found also. Look for a new update by Wednesday.

I have an article on a death which gives the reason for the death. I know in the Help that it says it doesn't print in reports yet but that an option may be added later. My question is, is there anyway of being able to suppress printing of notes like in BK5 with the asterisk? If I attempt to put anything in the pathname of the note such as $$ or * I get a illegal operation 75 and get dropped out of BKW6, so I can only assume that all you can show is just an ordinary path/filename.

In BKW6 if you do not want a note to print, set it to "never print" in the Print Where column of the grid.

We repeat the wish to have the opportunity to change an event or to add some. We miss now the opportunity of two events, which we often used in BK 5.2 We mean: Moved and Brith mila.
We use "move" to have the opportunity to follow people in the time and places.
"Brith mila" is circumcise on the eighth day after the birth of a Jewish boy. An important mile-stone in the Jewish religion, like Baptism for the Christians.
In the past it was in the Dutch administration an official document about the Brith mila that also was used at the marriage of that man instead of a birth-certificate.
So we repeat the question to have an opportunity to add/change certain events.

I will consider adding Brith Mila
Instead of Moved, use Resided. That shows where people stayed at different times.

----

We use the lines of events also for small notes. For example that we have put a question about this person to an archive. If we want to put a "Note" in N the program tells us: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. And that happened. If we put something in the column event/fact we can prevent this situation. Is this normal?

If you click N for Notes, you should not get an error. You are clicking the N column for an existing event right?

I had a large number of $$ text files in version BK5.0, almost all of which now appear to be part of the 'internal' text file system in BKW6.
Is there any report I can run, or any other way of checking, that there is an 'internal' text file where I previously had the $ text file?
Can I delete the $ text files if the text is now part of the 'internal' text file?

There is a way to show which people still have external note files attached.
Go to Lists, Numeric Report, and pick field 1 and also field 79 and then pick Preview.
Scan down the pages to see any external note files still in use.
Those files for sure should NOT be deleted.
Check those people that have an external file to see if they have more than one file attached since only the first is listed on the report.
Another option is to make a Backup that includes text files. Then look on the backup disks to see what text files were copied. Those are still in use.
Before you delete any text files you no longer need, make a backup copy to diskette to keep for a couple months.

I'm a bit confused by the questions asked when closing the source field - "Do you want the master source changed for every citation of this master source? ...yes to change the master source. ...no to add a new master source with these changes.
Would you please explain? I had trouble at first with BK5.2, because I added page numbers in the body of the source and so had a LONG list of sources which I would like to avoid this time. I finally realized that I needed to add the page numbers in the space provided -- slow learner! How should I pick from the above to avoid a lengthy list of sources again?

The top part of the source is the master source.
The bottom part is the citation information. (different color background)
The master source is in the source database one time and it can be cited hundreds of times for different events, etc.
If you go to a source and you change the top part (the master part) then when you close, it asks if you want to change it for every citation, or if you want to make a new master source.
For example, if the master source is a book, and if you mispelled the name of the book and you are fixing it, then you want it fixed for every citation. In other words, any event that cited that book should have this correction.
However, if you have changed some information in the master source, like you have added some actual text from the source, you may want to make a new master source with that additional information. You may not want all events that cite that source to show the actual text that you added. So you can tell it to make a new master source, but leave the old source the way it was. Then you would have two master sources, one with the changes, and one the way is was before.

(events and source questions)
I have been a long time registered user and am currently using BK5.2g for Windows. I tried the earlier versions of version 6, found some problems with the way that I had entered data and fixed that.
I recently tried the latest version of BKW6. The importing of data went fine. What I'm having trouble understanding is the relationship between events and sources. What I'd like to have is multiple sources for fields within the event. An example: Born: 1 Jan 1801 in: Virginia
I have the date coming from a tombstone, and the place coming from a census. Actually, two different census (1850 and 1860). So, I'd like to attach a source to the date, and two sources to the location. Are the date and location inseperable as an event? Can I do this? I understand that I can have multiple sources for an event. Any assistance?

Attempting to use F6 to expose the three lines for reference data to be added the screen reverts to the Edit family screen.
Decided to download new version from John Steed's site. Still wouldn't work.
Yet just now went in and tried it and BINGO it worked.
So it appears to be intermittent and might just be this machine. Anyone strike this?

When you are pressing the F6 key, where is the cursor?
Is the cursor on a date or location field? It should be.
If you have trouble with F6 just click the button to the left of the event. But F6 should work if the cursor is blinking on a date or location field. The problem could be related to some other program you have running that uses F6 for a hotkey.

I am guilty of deleting persons, but not the link to spouse - and I knew better. The brain is getting weaker with age. (:)) Is there a way to get rid of the marriages now "hanging around" (as John said) somewhere in BK or does it matter?

The marriage count on the main screen does not go down when you delete a person or delete a link to marriage. Basically that number never goes down. So do not rely on that marriage number if you must know the actual number of real marriages. If you absolutely must know the number of marriages then you can use the Split database routine and pick Range of numbers and copy everyone to a new directory and it will copy only the real marriages. Then open that database and see the count. Note that doing so will renumber everyone in your database which most people do not want to have happen.
Note that my Utility program will add back deleted numbers for people and will not change the BK code numbers of any existing people. (this is a different subject, but I wanted to clarify that the Utility program does not change BK code numbers, but the Split database routine does change BK code numbers.)
As to whether it matters, no, as long as the number of marriages shown on the main screen is not critical to what you are doing, then it does not matter that it does not go down. I do not plan to spend a lot of time to try to make that number perfect in the current version. I am working on a new version of BK that will not rely on the same system for counting marriages.

Master source I assume could be e.g. 1881 census, or St X Parish Register, or a printed book and the info below that is reasonably self explanatory. This master source can then be used with the same details across a number of people(?).
Where I'm less certain of what's the best thing to do comes in the differences between 'Actual text' and 'source for this citation'. Would the first one be where the entry concerns a number of events (e.g. several people on a tombstone) and the second for the part that concerns the date event it's linked to (e.g. great granddad's own inscription?).
What sort of citation is correct/most appropriate for sources such as English BDM certificates?
Also, I can't find out on the Sources screen what 'Scope' means and what effect it has - I don't want to play around with this only to find I've messed up my sources ...
I know it's a matter of personal preference for a lot of this, but having changed my mind in the past about the 'best way' to do things, I'm interested in hearing what others have found!

The Master source is the part of the source that is used or could be used by many people.
The Citation part of the source is the part that applies to this citation only.
So the book title is part of the master source, but the page number is for this citation.
The text boxes can be for either depending on the source and how you use it.
You could put the text of a will in the master source part.
You could put a quote from a book in the citation part if it only applies to this citation of that source.
The Master part and Citation part do not have any relation to Primary or Secondary sources. It is just a way to prevent a lot of duplication and retyping of source information. Primary and Secondary sources can be entered the same way and you can put the information in the Master part of the source so many people can cite the same source.

An initial study of BKW6, I have 2 initial and immediate concerns. First, in previous versions, including the original DOS version, the user was allowed to enter his/her own field names and was not restricted by a pre-selected list. Therefore the automatic conversion from BK5 to BKW6 causes data in certain fields to irrelevant and meaningless. With more than 6000 names in my BK5, to change words to make BKW6 fields meaningful, the task is monumental.
Second, and far more importantly, there does not appear to be a way to add text and indicate that it should NOT be printed. (in a register report, for example) There are things we learn about people, (people who are either still living or their descendants are living) that would be embarrassing if others knew these certain facts. In BK5, the choice on the "Options", Tab "Other" listed an option, "Character meaning never print messages." I cannot find such an option in BKW6.

I plan to add a way to add custom events in the future.
Currently all the major events that gedcom can handle are listed.
In BKW6 on the Notes tab you can enter a note and there is a column about Where to Print.
Set that to Never print if you never want that message to print.

----

It appears that I can only use the master source (top part of the source page) for multiple events.
There are going to be times when I will want to use the complete source information (master source from the top part of the source page, PLUS the information on the bottom part of the page) for each of several events. Is there a way to do this without copying and pasting?

You can cite the previous master source and the previous page number. There is a button for that when you click on the S column to add a source to an event.
If you have a lot of events with the same Notes or Comments, put them in the top section, not the citation section.
