Alfama is the oldest, most fascinating and characteristic district
of the city.
Recently it has gone through a facelift without the romantic view
over the city and Rio Tejo loosing its original charm. The condensed
space and architectural structure makes any alteration difficult.
The Moorish hillside of Alfama survived the great 1755 earthquake.
Dated to sometime in 1100 (the name comes from Al-hamma), it's
crowned by the old castle São Jorge.
At night, lamps twinkles from bars and small restaurants where
the sound of Fado can be heard.
