After a long period of planning, the day came that we could load car & trailer with scuba gear, compressor, food(!), clothing, dogs and other convenient stuff for a rainy day. 15 participants turned up this time, and it was quite a lot of logistics to make everyone assured they would arrive at about the same time as their equipment. Our little VW Touran had about 300 Ibs to much on the rear axle, but we were just about “legal” otherwise. We’re not so sure about all the others on their way up! We stayed at Knutshaug Fishing Holidays on Dolmøy this time, and it turned out to be an excellent choice for us. Two grandious apartments, each with 4 double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a spa and a sauna in each of the apartments, were ready for us as we arrived after 10-12 hours of driving partly in blizzard conditions. And we ourselves ended up stuck in the middle of the road in a very long 8% steep hill. Lucky for us Håkon & Henrik were only 6-7 miles ahead of us with their “Powerwagon 4x4”. They pulled us up over the hill, and we managed the rest of the way with just a little wounded pride... The first two days were rather windy, and in February this means you’ll be rather "cold ears" on any boatride. Our scuba diving was therefore put to local destinations these two days. But what do you know, monday morning out came the sun and the skies were blue, though it wasn’t quite summer. A feeling of a success trip came crawling as the wind died out. Wednesday and Thursday were just like Easter Holidays with calm winds and sun-sun-sun!
We knew we would see clear waters beforehand, but something like what we all experienced together during a nightdive isn’t exactly what any of us have experienced before. It must have been about 120 feet visual sight under water during this dive! We were lying at 75 feet ourselves, looking over a cliff down at 140-150 feet in the light of our 50w lamps. A very odd feeling... In a glimps we thought we saw other divers above us, but it wasn’t. It was the moon peeking down to us down there! Undescribable... It must be experienced to be understood!
We got lots of current diving, from romantic moonshine drifts to almost perverse rides through the 15 knots ”Storstraumen”. We gathered lots of seafood of course. Some of us wanted to try wreck diving, and the “Sandsvalen” was “found again” at 100 feet in “Dolmsundet”. The echo sounder is a great thing! Every night was a nightdive, and it turned out to be an excellent dive site just outside our windows at “Knutshaug”. Our daytrips Wednesday and Thursday, to the skerries facing the edge og the North Sea, turned out to be a high point on our trip. Almost calm windconditions and sun, so the BBQ was a success. Not bad for February in Norway!
Airfills went smooth as we had brought with us two good compressors, a filling panel and an airbank. We had to our disposal about 40 steel scuba tanks, and nobody had to wait for airfills. This was allright with most of us we think! We bought food and enjoyed our meals together, and we eate well. Of course we prepared a share of seafood. Our host Robert Knutshaug came over with three grand trouts from his fish farm. Plenty for all of us, and then some for the fish soup the next day. Mona prepared her famous scallops, and some envy was traced among the rest of us “hobby chefs” ;-) 20 Ibs of filet of beef and pork ended on the BBQ one night, and this was probably a bit over the expectations for “meals included” for most of us. The trip of a whole week at Knutshaug Fishing Holidays, with free boatrides, diving, airfills and three meals a day came surprisingly cheap, considered the luxurious conditions we had compared to what most of us assosiate with scuba diving trips. We would like to express our thanks to the participants for a wonderful week that has given us great memories and many new friends! And also thanks to Robert Knutshaug, who came up with the appartements and boats just 100% perfect for our special needs! There’s a 100% chance we’ll be back very soon Robert! Knutshaug Fishing Holidays have our warmest recommendations! These people came with us: Anja, Vegard, Elisabeth, Terry, Linda, André, Håkon, Henrik, Jan, Runar, Jørgen, Per Willy, Ole Reidar, Mona og Reidar. Hundreds of pictures were taken and plenty of video shot. Some of the pictures are published here. Take your time and click through them. Copyright belongs to each photographer! Picture galleries:
