Recent information August 16th!!!!!
If you want to participate on a boat trip to the Russian settlement "Barentsburg", we can inform you that there are others in our group who are going there and they have booked the trip on Tuesday the 8th September.

The best to do is to book in advance, so you are sure to get on the same boat as the others and have a great day trip with the boat "Polar Girl".

JW6RHA has been to Barentsburg six times and it is worth going there.

Be adviced:
Those wanting to go on the boat tour to Barentsburg, you must book
themselves direct with: www.spitsbergentravel.no/eng
Even though we are a bit outside the season, it is adviceable to book it early.

Use this email to get in direct contact with the travel agent in Longyearbyen info@spitsbergentravel.no   and write Att.  Gosia Slubowska

Write the travelagent and they will give you who wants to go on tours up there (boat trip or others) assistanse and information and how and when to pay for the tours.

At the last SYLRA meeting in Østersund several of the yls came with wishes of a yl expedition in Scandinavia. Ingrid LA8FOA and Unni LA6RHA talked about this to try finding out what we could do in connection with the SYLRA meeting on Kolbotn 2009.

The result was to organize an "Option 2" in connection with our SYLRA meeting for those wanting to go on a yl expedition (with the OM in the suitcase of course...hi) up to Svalbard.

Ten years have gone by since there was a yl meeting up there. That time, 1998, there was the International Polar YL in Longyearbyen.

This time to make this as economical as possible so we can both enjoy the radio and our stay we have planned doing the following:

The shack has been booked from Sunday 6th September until Sunday 13th September. There will be a fee collected from each of the participants who wants to use the shack. This to cover the expenses for the rent of the shack while we
are up there. Click here for photos taken in July of the shack and the radio equipment.

We have got the call "JW1SYL"  which we can use from Svalbard.

Accomodation on Svalbard:

Top 3 photos are from a stay room, the bar and the nice restaurant situated in our guesthouse.
Then the eating place, if we cater for ourselves and the three last ones are from the living room (stay rooms) where we can gather and relax, watch tv, discuss the radio and other things and the kitchen where we can make our food.

The above photos was taken during LA6RHA Unni's 16th visit to Svalbard. She stayed at Polarriggen which is a very nice and special place near the centre of Longyearbyen and near the shack.

The main building has 18 single rooms and 15 double rooms with bunk beds. The rooms are of basic standard. Before Polarriggen became an accommodation for tourists it was used as housing for the mine workers of Svalbard. There are shared showers and toilets.

Since Mary-Ann who is the owner of this very special place is constantly renewing it. There is a new wing of this "mining hotel" where the rooms have their own shower. Though there are plenty of shower and toilet to be used so no que folk...hi.

The prices here are the lowest in Longyearbyen and what is special about this accomodation is that if you want, you can cather for yourself. This mean you can buy food and drinks at the shop and make your own food. There are a kitchen
with all the facilities to be used by those who live there.

We strongly recomand this very nice place.

Please be adviced that each of those going to Svalbard take contact with Ingrid LA8FOA  ingrid.kleveland@c2i.net
and she will arrange both the accomodation and flight bookings.

For those of you wanting to go to Svalbard, it is entirely up to you how long you want to stay up there. But we aim to
leave on Sunday the 6th September on flight leaving Oslo in the afternoon destined to Svalbard via Tromsø. Take a
look at these links for Svalbard: www.svalbard.net

Facts about the WX on Svalbard: Average temperature in summer is about + 6 degrees Celcius.

This flight will let us have some hours in Tromsø http://www.destinasjontromso.no/english/index.html and we will try to arrange something for those going to Svalbard in connection with this stop.

We hope so many as possible would like to join us on this SYLRA  polar expedition .
