Climbing in New Zealand - Wharepapa/Froggatt
During our stay in New Zealand we had the opportunity to join the
Auckland University Rock and Alpine Club (AURAC) on their orientation trip
to Froggatt Edge. Froggatt
Edge is located south of Hamilton near the Wharepapa region,
and is a highly developed field with approximately 250 climbs.
As the rest of the touristified New Zealand, people seems to try to make
money out of everything, but for the moment no fees are required to climb
here. But that's only until the area is fully developed. Then you have to
pay a fee to enter the area. Maybe this is not in the good old spirit of
climbing, but considering the soft rock and the need for maintenance of the
bolts, this is maybe acceptable. Then we can rely on that the bolts are up
to date when it comes to quality and security.
I would like to use
this opportunity to thank AURAC for letting us join the trip. I think
they're really great people. Below you can find a selection of pictures from
the trip.
