For first time in history majestic Tana river is dethronized as the top salmon river in Norway. Official catch statistics for the 2005 season tells that Gaula gave the best catches.

A fast summary of the catch statistics gives ut these interesting developments:

  • Tana had another catastrophic bad salmon season. Estimated catches of salmon and sea trout drops from 35,8 metric tons in 2004 to 33,8 tons in 2005. What is going on in this important river system??
  • River catches along the Trondheim Fjord increase with 49 percent, compared to the 2004 season. Catches grows to a total of 83 tons in the rivers of this region, up 27 tons from the year before. A historic buy-out agreement with sea net-fishermen is probably the main reason. AND: Catches in the Trondheim region is programmed to increase even more in the forthcoming years, as the five year long buy-out scheeme goes on. • Gaula is now the undisputed Formula 1 salmon river in Norway, with a season catch of 37,5 tons - up 10,3 tons from the year before!
  • Namsen is also in front of Tana, with a total catch of 34,1 tons - up 10,5 tons.
  • Orkla catches increases significantly, but much snow in the mountains and wet summer creates cold conditions and slower fishing than expected.
  • Finnmark is still the number one salmon fishing county in Norway, with well over 100 tons of catches. Alta river, Stabburselva and Repparfjord River give best results in many years.
  • Historic good catches in Mandal River and Otra River, on the southern tip of Norway.

Fishing in Orkla was good in 2005, but could have been even better if it was not for the cold water conditions througout the season. Photo: Jan Gunnar Furuly.
