The April 1997 Salmon Fly Swap



"Silver Downeaster, Joel Sampson, Canada


Hook: Orvis single or double salmon, #2-10.
Thread: Black.
Tag: Fine oval silver tinsel.
Tail: Golden pheasant crest.
Butt: Black ostrich herl.
Body: Flat silver tinsel.
Rib: Fine oval silver tinsel.
Collar: Orange hackle - collar style, pulled down.
Wing: Black bear.


1. Tie in oval silver tinsel. Take it back to about the point of the barb.

2. Wrap forward for 4 or 5 turns. Tie of with a single wind of thread.

3. Tie in tail.

4. At the same point as the tail tie in a black ostrich herl.

5. Wrap herl froward 3 or 4 turns.

6. Pull oval silver tinsel toward back and tie off the ostrich herl.

7. Wrap thread to just past the end of the return eye.

8. Tie in flat silver tinsel here.

9. Wrap the tinsel back and then forward.

10. Wrap the oval silver tinsel forward as a rib. 5 or 6 turns.

11. Tie in 1 Hot Orange saddle hackle at the point the rib is tied off.

12. Tie hackle forward in 3 to 4 turns pulling the hackle back towards the bend after each turn.

13. Tie in the black bear hair for the wing so it sets over top of the hackle.

14. Finish head.
