The XS2 was introduced in the Brilliant Red and White  colorscheme, on 2nd production the Pearl Yellow Gold and Brilliant Red and Black colorsheme was offered.

The XS2 was the first XS650 model to be equiped with an electric starter and  hydralic front diskbrakes. The model also had slightly different carburetors, new cylinders, new crank case covers, a new crank ass'y, transmission gear changes, new aircleaner cases with new elements, a bigger battery box, different rear shock absorbers, new front forks and more.
