Extracts from the stunning booklet:

THE INMATES
"North London's Inmates picked up a following at an odd moment. In 1978 they regularly packed Islington's Hope And Anchor pub with their soul-influenced Stones-style R&B - no mean feat in a city and era totally submerged under punk rock. After a debut single for the tiny Soho Records - a cover of The Standells' "Dirty Water" - they signed with Radar Records and recorded their 1979 debut album "First Offence". Among its highlights is "Mr. Unreliable", a song that, although not punk, certainly injects its '60s feel with the energy of the late '70s.

The band had a true ace in singer Bill Hurley, who had earlier been offered the front spot with London R&B outfit The Count Bishops. Stuck in a job with a magazine publisher, he declined the offer but kept his eye on the "musicians wanted" small adds. Seeing one mentioning Wilson Pickett, Chuck Berry and Howlin' Wolf, he called up, met Peter Gunn and Ben Donnelly, and then hooked up with ex-Cannibal Tony Oliver. "First Offence" picked up attention at home and in America, so the day job didn't last much longer".

PRODUCER'S NOTE
"It was put to me recently, that a slot on Nuggets was the garage band equivalent of an Oscar. A wonderful analogy, to be sure, but one that misses the point, at least partly. From the start Gary Stewart and I, as producers, both agreed Children Of Nuggets, should avoid becoming the expected précis of the '60s revival diaspora. Instead, we believed it should reflect the full range of postpunk music that wedded a stylish foot in the past to a passionate rock 'n' roll spirit, whether either facet was/is intrinsic to the act's own style, or merely to that of the song at hand - song being the operative word. Since when was a collection of great songs such a radical concept?"...
-- Alec Palao - El Cerrito, California
