Alexei Shirov was born in Latvia in 1972, but has now moved to Spain. He became a grandmaster in 1990 and soon joined the world elite. On the last world ranking Shirov is in 7th place with 2718. In the recent FIDE World Championship Shirov lost the final match against Viswanathan Anand. Shirov is known for his agressive and inventive style of play and his strong enggame play. Simen Agdestein was born in Norway in 1967. He was very talented, and took his first Norwegian title in 1982, only 15 years old. Agdestein became a grandmaster in 1985, but never mangaged to establish himself in the world elite. Except a period in 1997-99 his position as the leading Norwegian player has never been in doubt.
