Of the three parish-churches in Haugesund, the white-painted wooden Skaare kirke is the oldest. It was dedicated in 1858, and is situated in the northern part of the Haugesund citycenter. It replaced an old timber-church from the 16.th century that was far to small at that time for our fastgrowing town. ( Population 1835:37 1845:149 1855:1066 1865:3221 1866:3500 1870:4016 )
The parish is about to start building a modern church in the northern parts of Haugesund, on Udland. This will reduce the use of the attractive Skaare kirke.
Musical facts:
The church is beautiful and the inside is very intimate , but does not have the acoustical qualities of Rossabö and Vaar Frelsers churces. Nevertheless it is frequently used for concerts with song and instrumental groups. And the norwegian devine services include lots of hymns, organ voluntaries and other musical elements.
The last years Skaare menighets has not had a parish-choir, but the Udland-choir was established in 1997.
Main musical instrument:
Skaare kirke has a Steinmeyer-organ of 33 stops, installed in the late 50's.
In 1999 a new 11-stops choir-organ can be ready for use, if accepted by the necessary authorities ( see the Skaare organ page).
Choirs
Udland-koret. Choir leader: Ove Olaisen
Mixed parish-choir established in 1997
