D/S BØRØYSUND
1908

Buildt in 1908, refitted 1925 and 1935. Length 108 ft 88 in...Beam 18 ft 3 in... Draught 12 ft. 179 g.r.t.
Triple expansion steam engine with one coal fired Scoth Boiler.

The ship was built as the S.S. Odin at the now - defunt Trondheims Mekaniske Verksted for the Trondheim Lighter Company, and was used as a combined passenger ship and tug. In 1923 she was sold to the Hjelma and Herdla Steamship Company and sailed between Bergen and neighbouring islands until 1925. At this point she was renamed Skergard and entered into a more stable period, being sold to Vesterålen Steamship Company and sailing regular traffic in Veterålen under the name Børøysund until 1960.
Some years before The Norwegian Veteran Ship Club took over the ship, she was used as a training ship for Hadsel Techbical School, sailing under the name Hyma. After taking her over, The Norwegian Veteran Ship Club obtained permission from the Vesterålen Steamship Company to use the name Børøysund, the company's flag, funnel marking and bow emblem.
Since taking over in 1969 the ship has undergone extensive repairs and restoration under the leadership of our own restoration committee. The base for this restoration is the appearance of the ship as it was after her refit in 1935. Everything is being done to ensure an authentic restoration, where hull plates have to be replaced, rivets are used in the traditional manner, and the wooden decks are being restored to their original state caulking and pitc-lining. In the stern of the ship where the deck and hull been completed, the saoons and cabins have been restored. Midships and forward, however much still remains to be done. Much of this work will be done in 1997.
The engine and the boiler are being continually overhauld and are in satisfactory condition. Børøysund has her own post - office with its own cancellation, and flies the post flag as an official confirmation of this. We accept letters for our special postmark from philatelist all over the world.
Every year about 2000 member of the public travel as passengers on our coal - fired steamship. The crew use the opportunity to give guided tours, sell litterature, drawings etc. , and to inform about our activities actively passing on our maritime cultural history trough our sailing museum.
From May until September Børøysund can be hired for charter tours on Oslo Fjord. With her unique atmosphere the ship is particuarly suited to anniverseries and wedding prties. We receive confirmation from many sources that Børøysund, berthed below Akershus Forttress, has become a part of Oslo's harbour image, for many, a cherised attraction in the fjord during summer.
