Built 1942 Collingwood, Ontario, Canada, one of 16 western isles class, convoy escortShips.
Rebuilt 1946-7 at Storvik in Kristiansund Norway as a trawler. Owned and operated by the Heinsa co. in Kristiansund from 1947-64. Borgenes was sold to the Findus co. in Hammerfest in 1964 and fished for them up until 1973. The ship sank at Easter time in 1974, while laid up, and was raised and condemned the same year. She was taken to Narvik for derigging in ’74, where she sank again in 88. The vessel was raised and brought to Trondheim for rehabilitation. She sank again in 91 and was sold to a wreaker in Stoksund for scrap in 1996.
As a result of a massive effort by the Norwegian Society for the Preservation of Historic Vessels, the districts museum in Kristiansund, and local enthusiasts from Kristiansund, Borgenes was brought down from the scrappers bedding. (The only ship to ever do so) She arrived Kristiansund in April 1997.

Current activities:

Top deck of the wheelhouse is being replaced

Mainmast reassembled and will be raised summer 2001.

After deck, and mess hall to be restored 2001-2

Friends of Borgenes meet every Wednesday evening onboard at 6 o’clock.
