Pine Ridge violations of Human Rights

Native Americans killed by person or persons "unknown"
Murders in S.Dakota so far not investigated

The U.S. Civil Rights Commission receives reports from the F.B.I. and the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, and they're not happy. (feb.2ooo)

When the Civil Rights Commission visited Pine Ridge and Rapid City in December 99, members asked the F.B.I. for reports on the rate in which criminal cases involving native americans are solved. Reports recieved this week indicate 315 cases are still unsolved. 40 of those cases have been outstanding for at least one year.

The Department of Justice was asked to provide statistics on the number of civil rights complaints filed. Its report shows that only 72 of 12,000 complaints in the last year were ever presented to a grand jury.

Because these are national figures, Commission spokesman David Aronson says the information provided is inadequate. He says, the Commission may seek additional reports.
