Angband
AKA: Hells of Iron, Angamando
Location:
Located behind the Ered Engrin, 150 leagues north of Menegroth, Angband is the
huge underground network of fortress, factory, barracks, prison and mines of
Morgoth. Created by Melkor after he destroyed the two great globes- Ulluin and
Ormal, the Two Lamps. It was created to protect Utumno from the Valar, and was
first held by Sauron. Angband was mostly destroyed in the Battle of the Powers
but was rebuilt by Melkor after he returned to Middle-earth with the Silmarils.
On top of it he raised the three-peaked mountain Thangorodrim. It was finally
destroyed completely in the breaking of Beleriand.
Angmar
Location: NW - 40, 577
Located on both sides of the northern Misty Mountains, Angmar was a Witch-kingdom
inhabited by Hill-Men, Orcs and the likes and it's capital was Carn Dûm. Angmar's
Witch-king ruler was the Lord of the Nazgûl. Angmar tried to destroy the Dúnedain
of the North and nearly succeeded. In TA 1975 the Witch-king and his servants
were defeated and driven out of the North, and those who survived were soon
killed by the Eothéod.
Annûminas
Location: NW - 119, 387
The first capital of Arnor, created by Elendil. Located on the Nenuial
coast, it was deserted after the decline of Arnor. Elassar rebuilt it at the
start of the 4th Age. The chief Palantir of the North was in Annûminas until
its loss.

that contained the Druadan
Forest as well as abundant farmland. It was located north of the
Erui,

Built by Rómendacil II around TA 1340, these two immense stone statues marked
the northern boundary of Gondor. Placed at the northern entrance to Nen Hithoel,
the two awe-inspiring statues of Isildur and Anarion were located on either
side of the river Anduin.

The Dúnadan Kingdom of Middle-earth
which was founded by Elendil, its first king, in S.A. 3320. It's first capital
city was Annúminas, but later the capital city became Fornost, before 861. Arnor
included all the lands between the Lhûn and Gwathlo-Bruinen at its peak. As
a city it did not prosper, however the Line of Isildur of the Dúnedain was preserved
despite all its troubles.

Location:
At the end of the First Age, this land was the haven for Men and Elves fleeing
the ruins of Doriath, Falas, and Gondolin. Located west of the Mouths of Sirion,
it it was protected by the mariners of Círdan and by Ulmo.
Azanulbizar
AKA: Dimrill Dale, Nanduhirion
Location:
The valley in the Misty Mountains located outsite the Great Gates of Khazad-dûm.
The final and hardest battle of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs was fought in
this valley. Azanulbizar was the source of the Silverlode and contained the
lake Kheled-zâram.

Sauron's
self-built fortress, constructed between SA 1000 and 1600 with the
power of the One
Ring. It was the greatest fortress in Middle-earth
in the Second and Third ages. Barad-dûr was located at the south end
of a great spur of the Ered
Lithui. It was captured at the end of the Second Age but it couldn't
be fully destroyed as long as the One
Ring survived. It was finally destroyed in 1309 when the One
Ring was also destroyed.

Location:
The golden-brown river that flows from it's source Nenuial. From Nenuial it
flows south and southwest into the Sea. The Bridge of Stonebows crossed the
Baranduin.

Location:
The farthest north and west mountain of the Moria, Barazinbar
contains beneath it the world's one and only Mithril-vein.
Here the Balrogs hid.

Location:
The Barrow-downs were located east of the Old Forest and on them were the Great
Barrows graves. These Downs were revered by the Dúnedain because in the Great
Barrows were buried Dúnedain of Cardolan, and chieftans of the Edains. The evil
Barrow-wights from Angmar inhabited the barrows around T.A. 1636 and afterwards
it was a greatly feared place.

The sea that separates Middle-earth from Aman. The main islands in the Belegaer

Beleriand
AKA: Land of the Elves
Location:
An area of Middle-earth in the First Age that had a shifting locality. At first
Bereliand encompassed the lands around the Bay of Balar. Later this shifted
to all the land west of the Ered Luin and south of the Ered Wethrin. It may
have also included Dorthonion and Nevrast at that time.During it's existence
Beleriand was divided into East and West by the River Sirion. The Andram divided
the mostly uninhabited south from the populous northern lands. Many various
people's inhabited Beleriand. At first it was home to the Sindar of Doriath
and the Falas, who were later joined by the Noldor of Nargothrond, Himlad, Thargelion,
East Beleriand and the Edain. Except for a portion of Ossiriand known later
as Lindon, all of Beleriand was ruined during the Great Battle at the end of
the First Age.

against Bree Hill, and was an important town in the days of Arnor's glory that
later dwindled in numbers and significance by the War of the Ring. In the Fourth
Age Bree again fourished.

Location:
Founded in the Second Age by Men from Dunland, this wooded land survived
all the wars in Middle-earth. It was located at the intersection of the Great
East and North Roads and was the home of both Men and Hobbits. Bree-land consisted
of four villages; Archet, Bree, Combe, and Staddle. Bree-land was part of Arnor
and later part of Arthedain. It contained many farms that provided a comfortable
living for it's inhabitants.

Location:
A river in Eriandor that joins with the Mitheithel and together form the Gwathlo.
The upper end of Bruinen was controlled by Elrond, who would cause a flood if
an enemy tried to cross it.

Location:
The folkland of the Brandybucks, an area of the Shire located between the Old
Forest and Baranduin. Originally separate from the Shire, it was added by King

the light from the Two Trees shone brightest before their poisoning. Tirion
was located here, where the land was the most beautiful.

Location:
The area in between the Anduin and Isen, in Gondor. The Great Plague almost
completely depopulated Calenardhon in T.A. 1636, and it was overtaken by the
Balchoth in 2510 who either killed or chased away it's remaining population.
It was then given to the Éothéod by Steward Cirion.

East Lórien at the ending of the Third Age.

Located north of Minas Morgul, this pass crosses over the Ephel Dúath. In actuality
Cirith Ungol was officially the road and Cleft east of Shelo's Lair, but commonly

It was the easier route to travel undetected when compared to the pass behind
Minas Ithil.

The great plain in between Cirith Gorgor and the Dead Marshes. In the Second
Age 3434, the great battle between Sauron and the Last Alliance took place in
this treeless plain.

Location:
The ancient city of Men on the southern slopes of Erebor. It was destroyed by
Smaug in the Third Age 2770. After Smaug's death in 2941, Bard, a descendant
of the Kings of Dale, became the city's first King. Dale was attacked by Sauron
and the Easterlings during the War of the Ring, but he was defeated and the
Men and Dwarves overpowered the seige. Dale was later protected and allied by
the Reunited Kingdom during the Fourth Age.

Located at the foot of Dwimorberg, the Dark Door is the entrance to the Paths
of the Dead.

Dol Guldur

The fortress probably built by Sauron in T.A. 1050, located in southwestern
Mirkwood. The wise discovered an evil power there in 1100, which grew steadily
for a thousand years and corrupted the forest. Gandalf discovered Dol Guldur's
master was Sauron, who continued to rule until 2941, at which time he was driven
away by the White Council. Sauron retreated but later sent 3 of the Nazgul to
again occupy Dol Guldur. Armies from there during the War of the Ring were defeated,
and Celeborn claimed it after Sauron's fall, at which time Galadriel cleared
it's pits and tore down it's walls.

Location:
The structure where the Palantir of Osgiliath were kept. It was destroyed during
the Kin-strife.
Doriath
AKA: Eglador, Hidden Kingdom, Elvenhome, Land of the Girdle
Location:
The Sindarin kingdom of Beleriand, created by Melian and Thingol in the First
Age. The Girdle of Melian was woven by Melial to protect the inner lands of
Doriath- Neldoreth, Nivrim and Region. Both Thingol and Melian protected these
lands on the inside and outside the Girdle. It avoided the Wars of Beleriand,
but because of Thingol's demand for a Silmaril, he was slain by Dwarves of Nogrod
who wanted it and Melian left Middle-earth because of his death. Doriath was,
in the end, caught in the Doom of the Noldor because of this. Finally it was
deserted after Dior was slain by the sons of Fëanor.
Dorthonion

Location:
The highlands located south of Ard-galen. It covered sixty leagues from east
to west and was covered with pine forests. In the First Age the First House
of Edain was established in Dorthonion. The land was eventually overrun by Orcs
and the Men and Elves living there deserted it permanently.
Drúadan Forest

Location:
The forest in Anórien, northwest of Minas Tirith, and home to the Woses.
Dunharrow
Location:
A fortress refuge built by Men of the Mountains, located above Harrowdale. It
was used by both Rohan and Gondor and was easily defended due to the location
at the top of a steep cliff and the design of it's only path.

of the Glanduin and west of the Misty Mountains.

Location:
The single arch of stone crossing the abyss at the eastern end of the Second
Hall of Khazad-dûm. It was built as a last defense from armies of the east.

Location:
Located at the top of the Endless Stair, this chamber was carved out of the
rock of the pinnacle of Zirak-zigil. It was ruined in T.A. 3019 in the Battle
of the Peak.

Location:
The castle on the western side of Udûn, built by Gondor in the Third Age. It
was created to guard the entrance to Mordor. Around T.A. 1640 it was deserted
by Gondor and later was occupied by Orcs.

Ring. The forest was heavily damaged by Orcs of Isengard at the end of the Third
Age, but the Ents finally stopped them when they destroyed Isengard during the

The dwelling of Shelob, the Great Spider, located under the Ephel
Duath near Cirith Ungol.

Location:
The land in Eriador covering around 18,000 square miles. Located between the
Far Downs and Baranduin, it was primarilly an agricultural land, ceded by King
Argeleb II in T.A. 1601 to the Hobbits. Most Hobbits in the Shire were laborers,
farmers or tradesmen. The Shire was divided into the Four Farthings and smaller
folklands.

Location:
Beginning near the West Gate of Khazad-dûm, this stream flowed alongside the
ancient road from Ost-in-Edhil to Khazad-dûm.

Location:
The large many-branched tunnels inhabited by Hobbits of the Shire,

of crystal and white walls. Galathilion grew here, at the base of the Mindon
Eldaliéva.

Hithoel.
Tol Eressëa

Location:
A large island, formed from the destruction of the Lamps of the Valar and the
subsequent upheaval. First located in the center of the Belegaer, it was lifted
by Ulmo to the Bay of Balar in order to move the Eldar to Aman. Later it was
finally rooted in the Bay of Eldamar, and became one of the Undying Lands. The
light of the Two Trees shone on Tol Eressëa.
